I will voice my thought on this a little more though. I agree that as the rule is stated there is no way people can play innocent with not knowing they would get stuck with the contract. However, with that being said I am not sure the rule is really honouring what it should be. The rule of the contract is essentially to stop people from handing out stupid contracts to older people. Theoretically having the rule as it is stated should make those contracts unmovable or at least have the player be worth no value, but currently as seen here people can still get value and there is no real repercussion for the bad contract handed out (at least not to the GM who made the signing).
I suggest that we move to changing the rule to aligning to how NHL does the cap recapture type penalty. Whichever team originally handed out the deal would be the team that gets stuck with the cap hit once a player retires. This should (in theory) actually allow those teams to move contracts easier (you know you are stuck with a 4 million hit for 2 more years but you can trade the guy for futures now since the person acquiring them won't have to deal with the buyout, you should be able to get a better value overall). This also stops new GMs from making potentially lop-sided trades if they do not put two and two together quickly upon joining the league. Thirdly, it correctly penalises the person who was just throwing contract money out there like candy.
Just thought about this earlier today and figured I would throw it out there as it seems to fit the intent (or intent as I understood it) of the rule a bit better.

Can I remove Parise's $9M contract?
This is an injustice, I shouldn't be punished for my own mistakes. #CapHitsMatter

Is this a, you don't agree with what I posted thing or? Purpose of what I posted was to question what we are actually attempting to punish. And we are trying to punish people here, let's not try to kid ourselves. However, are we trying to punish people in general for acquiring the older player with a longer contract (trade or signing) or are we trying to punish the people who actually create the long expensive contract to an older player (signing only)? I think it should be the second one.
