EXPLAIN YOURSELF.
I was analyzing your roster and see you have Voracek, Getzlaf, Kopitar, Mackinnon, St. Louis, Karlsson, Ekman-Larsson, Giordano, Shattenkirk, Halak.... and all surrounded by a solid support cast of other players like Doan, Zuccarello, Kruger, etc....
I thought, yeah, wow, his team is stacked, but then I look at your prospects......
You have Strome, Teravainen, Kempe, Vasilevski, Sanheim, Barbashev, and many other honorable mentions. HOW DO YOU HAVE A STACKED ROSTER ON TOP OF ARGUABLY THE BEST PROSPECT POOL IN THE LEAGUE.
Didn't you have the 1st overall pick in 2013 to draft Mackinnon too?! How does a roster with this much talent end up with 1st overall? I must've not been paying much attention in 2013 to notice.
Oh and it doesn't end here... you have 6 1st round picks in this season and next combined. Plus 3 2nd round picks.
To have a stacked roster like this, you think your prospect cupboards would be bare, but that is completely stacked better than anyone elses in the league too.
You also have 2.3 million in cap space this season to spare, (1.1 in space once the cap lowers to 69 mil) so you still even have wiggle room. I don't get it man, but you certainly have some big expiring contracts. I wonder how you're gonna pull it off, but you'll probably just use more magic and witchcraft.

Oh nah man I've been called out. But really, just worked with what I started with and then slowly improved since I took over a few years ago. When I started I had a strong group of players who I figured would be big in the future (or already were) having OEL, Karlsson, Shattenkirk, Quick, Getzlaf and Richards (might be forgetting some) and I built off that really slowly. I don't like to over-react and make a trade just to change things up unless it is a minor player. Some luck and a lot of reading up on players before I go to make a deal. A lot of the time I have gotten rid of someone just before they truly start losing value while also seeming to pick up prospects that tend to improve their value after I get them. Examples being getting rid of Richards right before his value took a hit (that was a tough one due to him being one of my favourite players) and more recently trading away Hodgson before this terrible season of his. I also added Kucherov this offseason and that is definitely looking like one of my better additions. As for the 1st overall. Sim hated me in the 2012-13 season and I finished around 7th or 8th worst and then got really lucky to win the draft. As for next season, I am fairly set for my plans there, might lose a couple people but have people to replace those that I do lose. edit: Figured I would throw in some links to some press releases I have done over the years. They sum of a decent amount of what I have done. Last Summers Release: vhockey.proboards.com/thread/15798/minnesotas-unpredictable-summer -- Includes many trades that worked out very well for myself. Two Years Ago Summer Release: vhockey.proboards.com/thread/14698/minnesota-past-present-future -- Showed the difference of the aforementioned 1st overall pick team to the next season March 2013 Release: vhockey.proboards.com/thread/13640/minnesota-year-far-future-goals -- Few more trades in here, the Gardiner for Strome swap included

Wow. Very nice. You've certainly aced your asset management so far. I totally forgot about how much you lucked out in the 2013 draft by winning the lottery with such a small % of winning.
2013 was a strange year indeed. I took over the Hurricanes in 2012 and it was one of the worst rosters I'd ever seen... things in Carolina are still bad. But in 2013 I somehow made the playoffs as the 8th seed, I took out Pittsburgh after being down 3-0 in the series.. I swept Buffalo somehow, all the while my top line was like Roy - Ribeiro - Erat. Then I lost in the eastern semis. But still, 2013 was weird. I had no business even being in the playoffs. And you were definitely a playoff team who ended up with #1 overall.
Last year in 2014, I finished dead last and didn't win the lottery. I lost out on Ekblad even after an agonizing season. Added more salt to the wound. The simulator definitely has a mind of its own. Ekblad was to be my lord and saviour, but I unfortunately ended up with #2 overall. Maybe I'll have better luck this year.
I'm light years from having a roster like yours due to the fact I inherited a team of aging fossils that were at the end of their careers. I just gotta use a waiting game technique now. My strategy is a lot like yours. I'm constantly reassessing value of players. Always reading up on whoever I am targeting in a trade and I always cut ties with a player right before I feel like his value is about to dip.
Keep up the excellent work, I'm looking forward to how you'll conduct your off-season this year.

i've had such bad luck with trading at times. i really dropped the ball when i trade forsberg and scandella for pominville. i've been trying to take on the same attitude of waiting or at least swapping out a guy but getting guys who I value the same (like the fucale trade with wolf, managed to replace the loss of wennberg by gaining perlini back in the gaborik trade). asset management is something i need to work on for sure
