The VHL Open Auction UFA proposal
As of this moment, even though I enjoy in-season re-signings as much as I enjoy being inappropriately touched in my privates, the process more or less works, because there is only one bidding party. However, during the off-season UFA process, it feels like a giant “black box”, you toss your offers in, and through a magical process, the results come in. Even some staff members don’t like the current system. The system I propose reverts free agency to the fairest, most open process possible: the open market.
Here’s how the plan works:
1. Free agency starts at a certain time, and ends after a certain duration (say 1 week to 12 days).
2. A player is signed at the deadline of free agency, OR 24 hours after the LAST HIGHEST BID. For example, if on the first day of free agency team A makes a 4 X 4 offer for player B, and nobody else does, the player is signed 24 hours later after that bid. However, if bids continue to come in, whatever bid is the highest when free agency closes, is the winner.
3. At the beginning of each auction, staff will decide (with regards to common sense) how many years the player will sign for. The staff can decide player X will only sign a 1 year deal, player Y will only sign a 4 year deal, player Z will sign anywhere from 3-4 years, player N will sign anywhere from 1-3 years, player M doesn’t care, blah blah blah.
4. Winner will be determined by “highest total dollar amount in the shortest number of time”. This obviously makes sense, because anybody would choose to make 8 million a year over 2 years compared to 4 million a year over 4 years.
5. NTCs will be a tiebreaker – if 2 offers are the same, the NTC offer wins.
6. The staff may choose to assign an additional random tiebreaker to any free agent at the beginning of free agency, they may be beneficial to your bid, they may be detrimental to your bid. Tie breakers may include 1. Hometown 2. Nice weather 3. Avoidance of TSN 4. Buddies 5. Overbearing Wife hates Edmonton 6. blah blah blah
