Rule Proposal: Limited Number of Cap Retained Players

Each team should be only allowed to retain salaries of 3 players in trades. Teams will be responsible for keeping track of their own retained caps, and a master list should be stickied somewhere.

No current retained cap count toward the 3.

just because one gm here cant keep his team cap within cap restrictions doesnt mean we have to change a whole rule around him. keep it as it is and just tweak what we have right now. maybe implement something like a team can only have a certain percentage of the cap alotted to cap hits.

This rule would only really affect one team, and would otherwise penalize rebuilding teams who legitimately use cap retention to gain assets.

I'm in favour of putting limits on salary cap retention. I've had at least one team admit to using retention to circumvent the salary floor.

Just make it so that you have to be above the floor without cap retention. Boom, problem solved and you can still hold a ton of cap.

I think the best solution would be to do as Edmonton suggested, and put a limit on the amount of salary retained in total. The NHL has total salary retention as 15% of the salary cap. They also have the three players rule, but I think that's just more work than needed.

This has been discussed at length in the staff boards. We will not limit the amount of contracts on which salary can be held but we are going to be implementing a maximum cap hit number (with eld salaries + buyouts).
