I just find it funny how the draft lottery was changed to prevent teams from tanking and when it worked as hoped (the two teams who tanked missed out) people still want it changed. You can't please people. Except it hasn't worked. The Sabres and Yotes still tanked harder than most teams in recent memory. The only way you finish that low in the standings is by tanking or by being an ineptly run franchise (Like Toronto and Edmonton).

No one is tanking for Matthews next year because 2nd prize isn't a generational talent like Eichel.

Matthews is an Arizona native so we already know who is winning that lottery. /conspiracy

Team will always tank until they fix the draft to somehow award winning vs. awarding losing/incompetence

The point of the draft lottery changes are twofold.
1) Prevent the tanking teams from being guaranteed the best pick - This part was accomplished when Buffalo and Arizona missed out on McDavid.
2) In turn this changes the behaviour of the tanking teams to no longer choose tanking as a valid strategy - This will take time, but I bet we already see it happening next season with the even bigger lottery changes coming into effect.
What is going to be interesting to see is the reaction when strong teams who have a down year (like LA/Boston) win the draft lottery. People are going to absolutely hate it, but that's what you get when you change the lottery so drastically. I'm not a fan of it personally and in my mind Buffalo should have got McDavid.

Team will always tank until they fix the draft to somehow award winning vs. awarding losing/incompetence You reward winning with playoff revenue and ultimately a Stanley Cup. Are you saying the Kings should have drafted first overall last year? The draft is there to promote parity. Weak teams have access to the best young players to rebuild and promote parity. Pittsburgh was the worst franchise in the league in the early 2000's and now a perennial contender. Because of the draft.

Does anybody favour a transition to an European style league, where the worst teams get relegated?

I'm saying the league needs to implement a system that discourages tanking by rewarding winning. I hate the fact that if you are a fan of a bad team, you essentially begin cheering for them to lose in order for them to get better(and I speak from experience as a Leafs fan). If anyone remembers my posts in similar threads then you know I am a big fan of the Gold system, where the first overall pick is awarded to the team that earns the most points after being mathematically eliminated. It still favours the bad teams because they will be eliminated first, but it also solves the tanking issue. Teams won't tank early because everyone believes they have a shot (ie the Calgary Flames) and even after being eliminated, you still have to be competitive enough to win games. You could theoretically have a game on the last day of the season where the WINNER earns the 1st overall pick. Its a great system that puts the emphasis on winning games while still rewarding bad teams (and just as an interesting FYI, the Oilers still would still have won the first overall pick if this system had been in place for this years draft)

Buffalo made it clear they were tanking from Game 1. I'm not convinced that system would work much better than the current system. It's an interesting idea in theory but I'm not certain it would change things in years where there is a Lemieux/Crosby available.
