Ya, ya, overall means shit...but it's also a formula of all the other ratings, that is primarily weighted towards PA, SC, DF and CK for defensemen, which mean a lot. And they are based on real life numbers, so a good indication of NHL performance.

Edler had a fantastic season last year, but his being paired with Chris Tanev was a huge reason for his success. He hasn't been known for his defensive prowess throughout his career and consistency's always been an issue with him up until last season.
Alzner is less flashy, but you know what you're getting with him - he's a rock defensively, great mobility, but he's a pure shutdown defenseman with no offensive production to speak of.
If Edler can keep up his play from last season, I take Edler because he's a bit more physical and has offensive tools, even though his statline hasn't reflected that the last couple of seasons.
But if I had to choose the guy who I think is most likely to keep up his current level of play, it'd be Alzner.

If we're not factoring in age or contract, and Edler is 5 OV points better than Alzner, why does Alzner have 6 votes? Dallas and his buddy created the ratings we have this year. Also, the ratings mean shit. Alzner is a beast defensively and the fact that he still chipped in 21 points last year is amazing for a shutdown defenseman. Not to mention he's played every game for the past 5 years. No injury issues where edler has reoccurring injury problems.

I think Edler is a better all-around defenseman than a lot of people suggest here. I agree that he is not the most consistent defensemen between those two but he is, in my opinion, way ahead of Alzner. Alzner is a good stay-at-home defenseman but those type of player are more common in the league and easier to find opposed to a player like Edler who can play on both PP and PK, can move the puck well, can play against top-lines in any situation and also can log over 20 minutes per game and still be effective.

I'll take a puck moving defenseman whose not a liability in his own end over a defensive defenseman every day. Puck possession is the name of the game and to me Alzner's defensive abilities do not outweigh Edler's ability to get the pick transitioning the other way.

So just because Alzner is considered a shutdown defenseman it means he has bad puck possession and a bad first pass? that's insane. Lets also take into consideration that he will drop his gloves to defend his teammates as well.
