I'll take a puck moving defenseman whose not a liability in his own end over a defensive defenseman every day. Puck possession is the name of the game and to me Alzner's defensive abilities do not outweigh Edler's ability to get the pick transitioning the other way. So just because Alzner is considered a shutdown defenseman it means he has bad puck possession and a bad first pass? that's insane. Lets also take into consideration that he will drop his gloves to defend his teammates as well. Not bad, just worse. Also fighting is a drawback, at least for me, especially for a defenseman. You only have 6 defensemen, can't afford to have one sit in the box for 5 minutes.

Alzner didn't even play 20 min per game last year, which is the average for defencemen.
Like Andre said, you need to drive possession to be effective. Wins are driven by goals, which are driven by shots, which are driven by possession. If you want to win, take Edler. If you want to satisfy the old school role of a d-man, take Alzner.
