Post-Draft Apocalyptic Debacle
Two things I think we can all agree on: the 2015 VHL draft was a massive success. Deals, prompt picking, general lack of bullshit, in summary, fun was had by all. In contrast, the post-draft “waiver period” or whatever is going on right now, is one giant fucking cluster of fucks.
What was meant to be designed as a mechanism of parity, has now become, a mechanism of parody.
Yes, we wanted the non-playoff teams to get a crack at some of the talent not drafted, but this doesn’t work.
Between the bottom 4 teams, they have claimed TWENTY-TWO PROSPECTS combined. That’s the equivalent of giving these 4 teams FIVE 4th ROUND PICKS EACH. Please tell me you see something wrong with this.
I had originally proposed several months ago that non-playoff teams got an extra-non-tradable 4th round pick, which would avoided this current pile of rat turd.
There are several issues right now that need to be fixed:
1. The missed pick mechanism needs to be looked at. Completely having a pick forfeited is too harsh, but we don’t want GMs to go unpunished for holding up the draft. If a GM misses a pick, what should happen is that all the rest of his picks get no clock and we move on, but he can make them up at the end of the draft. This way the draft doesn’t get held up by irresponsibility, but when a GM does come back it gives them some way of salvaging it so franchises don’t get perma-fucked.
2. New Jersey left. I don’t know if Joel was going to leave anyway, but he was at least fucking functional, after the last guy fucked that team over. A GM needs to be found ASAP (for free agency reasons), and the NJ franchise should be awarded a compensatory pick at the end of the 2016 draft for that missed pick, so the next guy doesn’t get punished.
3. Like I just said, the post-draft waiver thing doesn’t work. It makes no sense that a team can claim 11 prospects simultaneously. The system is a joke. This issue needs to be fixed IMMEDIATELY, not for next season.
There is a lot of interest in picking from all teams, there should a parity equalizer but not so that all playoff teams get completely cockblocked. Here’s what I propose:
Step 1: rescind all prospect claims
Step 2: Everybody send in a list of prospects they want to the admin to collate. This is OPTIONAL
Step 3: Award each non-playoff team with ONE prospect with the list they sent (so basically a 4th round done completely by lists)
Step 4: Award each non-playoff team with a SECOND prospect, in reverse order (so a snaked 5th round, done by lists)
Step 5: Award a playoff team with ONE prospect on their list that’s remaining (so the playoff teams that are active get something as well)
So in this method, non-playoff teams get 2 prospects, playoff teams get one, so that’s 14X2 + 16 = 44 prospects awarded, which probably concludes the entire post-draft period. Whoever is left reverts back to the old first come first serve system.
