Alright first off. Great job on the draft to all involved. I had no part in really any of it so kudos to my staff and all gm's for participation.
A couple bits of housekeeping. First off, all gm's are entitled to their opinion and i welcome solid discussion on any issue, however pissing contests aren't necessary. That said it just goes to show the passion in this league and an amazingly cleaver group of gm's we have.
Regarding new jersey (joel).....
He is a great guy and a solid hockey guy but he all along has admitted that running all aspects of a team is not for him. He's been an on again off again gm in the phl and been a great one when active. He knows his shit however that league has no cap or many of the full functions of an entire franchise this league does. Its what makes phl also a great league because its so different and cap leagues are just not for joel. No surprise he bailed based on his history and I'd still welcome him back at any time.
the issue regarding him leaving to us as a staff is a non issue. Thw rules were very clear and we do encourage lists. That said we are evaluating as we always are doing our current system so changes are possible moving forward.
What I brought up to staff is that is many of these leagues as I'm sure you are aware, activity can be an issue. We have had bouts of it in the past as well. Many of the rules created over the years is to spark activity. Activity in the vhl is certainly not an issue. We used to have to chase peoples picks and people didnt care about 3rd round picks, even 2nds sometimes. So these rules are in place to promote activity. Its almost like overparenting because our current gm's are so smart regarding hockey and high activity levels is why some rules may not be as necessary as in the past. We will be looking at this in the offseason but no changes will occur regarding this draft.
Finally what apparently was a much larger issue than i ever imagined. I first want to remind you all that these draft waivers are basically super long shots to be of any value to anyone's franchise. At first when I saw the arguing and groaning i thought ah well guess that didn't work but the more i think about it maybe it did. This was designed to be a small tool to aid button teams for parity and that's exactly what happened. Did we think there would be this many claims,no we didn't. Do i think it would be the same next year, no i dont. Here is why. ....
in the past gm's have neglected both farm and prospect lists so now with an active group across the board there wouldn't be enough Erin on the prospect lists moving forward to have crazy numbers of claims. Does that mean we are keeping it next year? Again no nit for sure. As always your staff is constantly working on ideas abd rules so we will see.
Did everyone like the setup on draft waivers? No but that wasn't the point. All this was intended for and what it was successful in doing was basically giving bottom teams a few more lottery tickets in the name of parity. Again to me this shouldnt have been a big deal because these are not difference makers but it does show again the intelligence of our league in building trends are trying to find the diamond in the rough. Even on the to of the league gm's like Minnesota and Boston realized it made more sense for them to wait and add after the week is over.
So the decision is that nothing changes this year and we are evaluating ideas on this and other things during the offseason. So let's put this to bed, move on and have confidence in your staff that we are always looking to improve the league.
Get ready for the free agent frenzy and enjoy it should be fun!
