Decided to look back and try to figure out all the leagues I've been in over the years. Some have lasted, many have not.......
Perennial Hockey League(PHL)
My first of my sim leagues and has lasted over many years now.
Beer Hockey League (BHL)
was a really fun league actually. Was put together basically as a Fuck you to our first PHL commish Mike who was a facist fuck! People like Billy Hamilton, Leslie Hamilton, Dennis, Ron started the league. They were all the Timmins people who were from the early phl days. I actually took over running the league in its last bit of existence.
Terry Chris Hockey League(TCHL)
YEAH DADDY YEAH!
This league had some merits but sadly was ran by a crazyman named Terry and super strict Chris from PHL Fame.
Had a phl concept plus a protected prospect list thing that kept changing. It was still overall not a bad league but so uptightly ran in the end was its downfall.
Virtual Hockey League (VHL)
First league with a cap I joined. Built by Wolf originally and I took over late in the first season as Wolf had some things going on. One of the most known leagues in sim and I'm proud of where it stands today.
Maurice Richard Fantasy Hockey League (MRFHL)
Was a longtime league and another I was in early on. Many guys from phl gave spent times in the league over the years. (Wolf, Ron, Dustin, Shaun, Andrew) all were in it for sure and maybe Tom too. Its original commissioners were very good and the league was active. It is the basis of a lot of what the VHL used for rules and such early in VHL years. I only left the MRFHL finally this past fall as I just had no more passion for it. Met a lot of really good gms and friends in that league over the years. Its biggest downfall to activity was actually to put the league as a portal basically eliminating the need of a message board and thus activity severely dropped. It looked great and was functional but easily made my decision to never put VHL as a portal very easy. The league is still going today and keeping afloat and I still check in on it.
** Fun fact**
While working out west in 2014 and 2015 I met a guy who became one of my best friends (dustin - phl Blues, Vhl Ducks).
I got to telling him about sim hockey and then i remembered his name and said hey i remember trade talks with you. Sure enough dustin and I were in Mrfhl back in like 06 or something and had email trade talks. Small world when two guys from opposite ends of canada can meet years later, work and hang out and not known you had met online years earlier)
The Players Fantasy Hockey League (PFHL)
This was an ok league. I wasted a lot of time on it. Thonad Gidlow was the commish. Met him I think thru the MRFHL. He had this league going, ended it and then let it go again. He needed the time to work on his short movie he was making. I remember him being a big Hurricanes fan and I think was from Carolina.
Maximum Hockey League (MHL)
Another Wolf creation. Was not a bad league. I dont think it lasted 3 years even. Too much inconsistency to simming and offseason by those running it was its ultimate downfall and led to massive dropoff in activity.
Calary Puck Hockey League (Cphl)
Its still going. Dick commish, shit league, runs with many vacant teams and shady deals. My stay there was very brief.
Old Time Hockey League or Old Guys Hockey League (OGHL)
Was very short lived league
GPHL I forget what it stood for. Created as a spinoff to MRFHL by Ryan Schurman a longtime MRFHL GM. it didnt last long.
West Coast Hockey League (WCHL)
Another Ryan Schurman attempt but also failed.
Dave Charron Hockey League (DCHL)
Was offered to gm's when the PFHL folded but I remember very little elese about it other than it was a portal league and ran two seasons a year. Is still being ran today.
Canadas Fantasy Hockey League (CFHL)
Was a league that used Junior hockey team names from anywhere in canada that you wanted to pick. Still used nhl names though. Was an ok league but again didnt last. Had to change its names due to a copyright though to CFHA Canadas Fantasy Hockey Association. Lol who knew!
The Fake Hockey League (TFHL)
Brad started this league. Was pretty good. I think this is the one that Corey of VHL Minny fame was simming. Tony was apart of it as were many VHL Guys. Activity dropped as Corey and Brad were quite busy and led to inconsistency and drop in activity. I had my first young team in any league but never got to see it grow and see what could have been.
All Star Hockey League (ASHL)
A league started by Tom with the greatest PHL and VHL Gm's. This was a league I was very excited about. Not sure why it failed but I remember a fantastic excitement and strength of the league. Shame it didnt last.
I myself only have the PHL and the VHL. I honestly dont think I have time or desire to add anymore leagues. I remember times where I was in 5 or 6 leagues at a time but I had an office job at the time. Been some good and some bad over the years and I'm certain I'm forgetting a few others I was in.
Full credit to the PHL and VHL for their sustainability over many years. MRFHL gets an honorable mention as well.
Would love to hear thoughts from people who were in any or many of these over the years.
