While it isn't quite to the deadline yet for submitting lists, this is a reminder that you may start to do so.
Please submit to this thread and we will move to the expansion draft board.
As a reminder we want you to identify which unprotected players meet the minimum requirements as each team must leave unprotected at least:
one goalie signed to a 2017-18 contract
one defenseman signed to a 2017-18 contract with at least 40 GP in the 16-17 NHL season OR 70GP over the 15-16 and 16-17 seasons
one forward signed to a 2017-18 contract with at least 40 GP in the 16-17 NHL season OR 70GP over the 15-16 and 16-17 seasons
THERE ARE THOSE THAT MAY BE UNABLE TO MEET THE MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS..........
As the rules have been in place for well over a year and every team had the opportunity to manage this, here outlines the three tiers we have in the league for protection and exposed lists, with examples and punishements....
Tier 1: Enough players to protect while exposing an eligible player who meets the requirements - no problem
Tier 2: Enough players to protect but can't expose an eligible player who meets the requirements - MUST either expose a player they would otherwise protect OR may chose to expose an ineligible player who does meet the requirements. ANY RE-SIGNED IN SEASON UFA CANNOT BE USED TO MEET THE REQUIREMENTS.
ex. 1: Ottawa goaltenders
Luongo is pending UFA - Brossoit is eligible - Hellebuyck, Laurikainen and Lassisnantti are ineligible.
Ottawa may chose to expose one of their ineligible goaltenders in order to protect Brossoit as they all meet the requirement (of being signed to a 2017-18 deal).
Because Ottawa cannot both protect a goalie and expose an eligible goalie meeting the requirements, they should be given the option of leaving an eligible player unprotected (and protecting no goalie) or protect a goalie and chose to expose an ineligible player instead.
ex. 2: Pittsburgh defensemen
Moore is eligible - Stuart, Nikitin and Svedberg do not meet requirements (of being signed to a 2017-18 deal) - Greene, Johns, Lashoff and Lane do not meet requirements (40GP in 16-17 or 70GP in 15-16 and 16-17)
Pittsburgh is forced to expose John Moore and protect to no eligible defensemen
Tier 3: Can't expose a player who meets the requirement (whether eligible or not) - faces penalty of losing a 3rd round draft pick.
ex: Pittsburgh goalies
Niemi, Kinkaid and Labarbera are all pending UFAs and do not meet requirement of being signed in 17-18. Pittsburgh is unable to expose a player to requirements and takes a penalty. This penalty pick will be also given to the expansion franchise.
I will start entering the mandatory protected players (in-season re-signed ufas) into the master list.
Please be sure to list the format you are using (7-3-1 or 8-1) as well as the protected players by position AND the players that meet exposed requirements by position.
Post any questions and lists here.
