1 word, Lundqvist

They dont want to rush Montoya, he is their most valuable asset to trade right now. Sitting on the bench all year will not help your developement, so he starts in the AHL. Next season (Tavares Draft, season) he will play in the NHL, most likely a 60/20 split with Lundqvist, to showcase him to the league (Think Minny, with their goalies). After hes proven at the NHL level, they will be able to trade him for help either on offense or defense.

Some teams might even take a chance on him now, if they lack a future starter in their pipeline.
