Hello VHL, it's been a bit since things have been happening around here. With the holiday season behind us, and us now halfway through the 2022-2023 season, there are a couple things of note to announce to the league.
Our newly integrated RFA Signing Scale and Bridge Scale had to have some minor adjustments made in order to provide more realism and consistency.
Here is what it was when it was announced on August 31, 2022.
Here is what we have officially amended it to on January 8th, 2023.
Only the Skaters we changed, and as you can see, we added an additional tier and revised the OV 69 (Nice) to OV 79. We felt by splitting these tiers up, it provided more realism in player value. In the old tier system, a player like Elias Pettersson would have only been signed for $4,500,000. With the new revised tier system, his worth is now more realistic at $6,500,000 (which theoretically speaking, is still low, however his current rating is based off a down year he had last year).
A main purpose to revising the tiers was to prevent the ability for GMs to capitalize on down years and lock a player long term whom was rated 75 or lower (depending on the dice rolls) to huge discounts, all the while still respecting a GMs ability to bridge scale.
Which is a point I'd like to remind the league, that skaters rated 69-75 can be signed to a bridge deal (depending on the dice roll). Any skaters rated 76 and above must be signed to their full value. So the 75-76 OV is an important threshold moving forward. Anyone rated 68 and under will only be eligible to sign two-year contracts and are not eligible for bridge scaling. This was implemented so younger / developing players aren't locked in to 4-5 year, two-way contracts that would drastically underpay them long term
If you'd like more details and clarity, please visit the Rulebook section 10.
Now onto Offer Sheets... here is what our previous offer sheet compensation grid looked like.
And now this is what our new Offer Sheet compensation grid looks like as of January 8th, 2023.
As you can see, we made slight modifications to reflect our new salary cap. The most notable change is the last grid for compensation is now worth four (4) 1st round picks in the next three (3) drafts, instead of the previous three (3) 1st round pick requirement. This is to reflect the NHL and add more incentive for GMs to be more careful about their offer sheet submissions since it'll now cost you more draft pick capital.
With all of this said, I HIGHLY encourage GMs to please review Section 10 of the Rulebook and read all of the new rules that we put in place this past off-season, and to completely familiarize yourself with the new UFA/RFA signing process as we enter into that period.
UFA Offers can be sent now, and teams can only re-sign two (2) UFAs a season. If you fail to enter into a negotiation with a pending UFA by the trade deadline, that player will automatically go to auction in the following off-season.
And remember.. RFA Signings are CLOSED until the new RFA re-signing period opens in the summer. So do not stress about getting your RFAs under contract. I will make a formal announcement when the time comes formally announcing and explaining how the process will work. But you can get a good idea of it now by reading over Section 10 in the Rulebook. Tons of changes have happened under that section so it's important to get up to speed.
If you send an RFA offer after all of this, Scott will personally fly to your house and slap your peepee.
And as a final disclaimer, I just want to acknowledge that this is the first season of all of these new changes, and I understand the results may not be completely perfect this year and that we may have to make minor adjustments along the way in future seasons, but this process in one shape or another will be permanent moving forward.
If you have any questions, feel free to fire them off here unless your name is Brad..... and in the mean time, lets rock the rest of this season!
Thanks everyone.
