When I announced the prospect claim rule changes earlier in July, I interpreted the changes differently from the rest of the staff. In short, I messed up, and I sincerely apologize for any confusion I may have caused. My goal is to help everyone have a better experience here, and I understand how frustrating my incorrect interpretation must have been for everyone. Again, I apologize for my error and I hope the revised set clears things up. Changes have been bolded and italicized.
With commissioner approval, here are the revised prospect claim rules:
- All first-year NHL Entry Draft eligible players can be selected in the corresponding VHL Entry Draft.
- Once the VHL Entry Draft is over, the remaining NHL-drafted players will be available for selection in the Waiver Draft. Teams that wish to participate in the Waiver Draft must be compliant with the 20-prospect limit before it begins.
- As well, teams will have a forty-eight (48) hour period immediately following the VHL Entry Draft to ensure that their prospect pool is compliant with the 20-prospect limit. After this 48-hour period has elapsed, teams will not be able to make any trades involving their prospects until their prospect pool is compliant with this limit.
- Once the Waiver Draft is over, the remaining NHL-drafted players can then be claimed through regular prospect claims once the Waiver Draft has concluded.
- However, if a player goes undrafted in both the NHL and VHL Entry Drafts in their first year of eligibility, those players will re-enter the following VHL Entry Draft and cannot be claimed until said draft has concluded. At that point, they can be claimed in the subsequent Waiver Draft and through regular prospect claims, in that order.
Removal of RFA II Rule
As of now, the RFA II signing rule has been removed. All unclaimed players who are over the age of 25 will now be considered Unrestricted Free Agents who are eligible to sign with any team in offseason free agency.
All players in this category will be subject to a buyout penalty of half of their regular cap hit if bought out, in order to encourage realistic offers for unproven players and to prevent abuse of the inactivity buyout mechanism.
