Think this was done once before, a year or two ago. Fun to go thru the rosters and see who all in retaining salaries.
22 of 31 total VHL teams currently have retained salaries on the books.
Total Retained salary - $132,812,500
Total VHL salaries combined - $2,386,820,000
5.56% of all VHL salaries are retained.
Highest retention currently - Calgary Flames - $15,100,000
6 teams currently retaining $14,000,000 or more
Largest retained salary on the books for 2021-2022 season - Vegas Golden Knights - $14,300,000

I have a pretty firm rule of never retaining salary... my entire tenure in Carolina I didn't... only reason I have one of the books now is cause I am rebuilding, but after this season I will no longer have a cap hit and will no longer be retaining anything. I just don't understand having all that dead space on the payroll.

Agreed, inheriting Panarin’s 15.9 Mil contract, no matter how good of a player he is, that’s a tough contract to move. Retaining half his salary made it a movable contract to maximize the return
