It’s your favorite beaver reporting from the Canadian Rockies, back with an update for the days & weeks leading up to the trade deadline.
Lets just address the elephant, or should I say beaver, in the room. My sources have failed me for the flurry of huge trades that happened a few weeks ago. I was busy building my latest dam. I've upgraded to Beaver royalty thanks to the extra revenue generated from all of your dutyful clicks. My threads are nearly as much clickbait as Mia Khalifa, thanks to you peasants.
Now with some JOOOOICY Rumors.
1/ Florida ISNT done with his upgrades. I hear he is still circling the waters looking for another roster player for next year, while even dangling his 1st this year. He may be waiting to as close to the deadline to move this as it probably gets him a better return. Other GM's probably want to wait to as it gives him less time to jump ahead in the standings. I have heard Huberdeau's name as well as Heiskanen as these would be huge pieces in play.
2/ GM Joe in San Jose has been all over the place with his trades, and dont expect that to change. My sources tell me he is still actively working the phones still trying to rebuild the San Jose Sharks, this may be more of a retool then a rebuild.
3/ New Los Angeles Kings GM Chris Floresco has certainly done some impressive work thus far. His biggest asset left to trade is Ryan McDonagh, and with the ability to hold plenty of salary, he may be able to maximize on his return. I expect a contending team like the Columbus Blue Jackets to entertain this idea, possibly dangling BUF's 1st in 2022.
4/ Chicago has been relatively quiet thus far while dangling Tyson Barrie, Mike Hoffman, David Savard, Alexander Kerfoot and Mason Appleton. The long term contracts to Barrie Hoffman and Savard are a hinderance, and Chicago cannot eat any more current cap as they are at the 15%. This will make a tough sell so it may be quiet in Chicago.
5/ Edmonton has apparently had enough and has determined that their current core just isnt working anymore. My sources tell me that everything is available and a full rebuild may be coming in Edmonton. Darcy Kuemper is having a terrific season and may be one of their most valuable assets. A team like Buffalo will be interested, if they can garner enough valuable assets to make a trade work, if not I'd expect a team like Colorado, who are gonna be in tough next season with Carey Price and Jonathan Bernier, to consider making the move.
6/ Nashville is continuing the blowing up of their roster and it looks like Morgan Reilly and Sean Monahan may soon be on the move. I expect Reilly to net multiple assets (Grade A Prospect + 1st round pick). This might be a move easier pulled of at the draft. But we are keeping our ears low to the ground as things can move quickly.
7/ Buffalo has been quiet, and while their cupboards are bear in terms of prospects with a ton of value, they always seem to find a way to be creative and stay somewhat relevant. I don't expect this year to be any different. I can see them making a splash and buying low on some players in a gamble for the players to rebound. Look at above Chicago Hoffman/Barrie in Chicago or Toews in LA.
8/ Tampa Bay is a heavyweight that doesn't show any real weakness, and still have plenty of futures. This is a perfect example of solid GM'ing. I am hearing that they may still want to upgrade the 4th line in a real attempt to bring home Lord Stanley. They can make this move in a number of ways, but I'd expect them to offer up a player like Chytil and a 2nd round pick. As Biz Nasty would say, this team is a WAGON right now.
9/ Toronto is a team that has mightily underachieved this year. I suspect GM Mat Fargas will make some more moves as he contemplates which direction he should go from here. One name that might be in play is Blake Wheeler, if he can find any takers for his big $10,000,000 per salary.
