Taking over part way through, and with the team struggling, Owner and GM James Houghton has been doing an overhaul of the team, giving the Avs a new look. The following are the player transactions that have occurred in the last couple of weeks.
The first trade saw the Avs ship veteran D-Man Rob Blake and goaltending prospect Tyler Weiman to the Blues in exchange for 2 draft picks (4th and 5th Rounders) in this years entry draft. Also the team acquired top goaltending prospect Marek Schwarz along with rookie of the year from 2003 Barret Jackman, and depth defenceman Matt Walker.
That wasn't the only move that happened that week, a couple of days later the team dealt away forward Milan Hejduk, defenceman Patrice Brisbois and goaltender Vitaley Kolesnik in a blockbuster deal with the Dallas Stars for a slew of younger players and picks. The team acquired goaltender Vesa Toskala who's coming off of a very strong year. Also young froward Antti Miettinen and aging defenceman Eric Weinrich who was added to the deal for Salary Cap reasons. The Avs also landed key defensive prospects in Matt Niskanen and Niklas Grossman, along with a 1st round draft pick in the 2007 Entry Draft and a 2nd Round Pick in this year entry draft, where the team selected defencman Brian Strait.
Then finally just a couple of days ago the team moved forwards Antti Laaksonen and Brad Richardson to the Philadelphia Flyers. For hard hitting defenceman Denis Gauthier, prospect Steve Downie, and a '06 3rd Round pick, where the team picked forward John Armstrong.
EDITION:
This past week the club has made 2 further trades. Earlier in the week the team sent Dan Hinote to the Boston Bruins, in exchange for Paul Stastny's brother Yan Stastny, and two 4th Round Picks. The team selected goaltender James Reimer from the Red Deer Rebels with one of those picks.
We also did make one deadline day deal, sending left winger Andrew Brunette, recently aquired defenceman Eric Weinrich, and depth D-man Bob Boughner to the Wings. In exchange for defenceman Brett Lebda, prospects Jakub Kindl and Jiri Hudler, as well as a 2nd Round Pick in next years Entry Draft.
