Lundek's Corner (2022 Trade Deadline 22' Edition)
Sponsed by Juicyfruit
With approximately 5 days left until the 2022 VHL Deadline, things have been relatively quiet, in large part due to the flurry of trades back at the 50 game mark.
Here's some of what I'm working on thus far. HYYYUCKKK
Update #1 - April 12 - 2022 - 2:20PM EST
Vegas is looking to shed some future salary commitments, and may be willing to part with some prospects to do so. Tyler Johnson was on waivers earlier this week so he could be the first player to go. Expect a prospect to go with him. I expect they may be looking at a player with more production around the same caphit, although dont be surprised if they downgrade to get some more cap relief as well. (L3)
Hearing Florida are close to sending out a young d man for a top 6 forward….still kicking tires on veteran top pair d men across the league as well, but with the playoffs not in sight this year, Its almost certainly for a forward with some term or RFA rights remaining. I'm expecting the defenseman to be either Carson Lambos or Evan Bouchard, while also expecting other pieces to be involved. (L4)
Buffalo has shipped out yet another future first round pick, this time to help with the long-term goaltending situation. I don't expect them to be done with the trades as they look to make one more run at the cup, as their window is rapidly closing. I see them wanting to acquire one more piece, however their prospect cupboards are pretty bare so striking any deal may prove difficult. (L2)
Los Angeles still has some pieces that contending GM's may be interested in. Zuccerallo could be a perfect fit for a contending team. I see him being possibly traded with held salary, and at least one more 1st round pick in 2022 or 2023 in GM Floresco's future. (L3)
The Dallas Stars currently sit atop of the VHL, but with 5 days to go until the deadline I hear the GM Jussi is nervous about the playoffs and that ownership has tremendous pressure on him to at least reach the conference finals. With that being said, he has some cap room left and a deep prospect pool. He could risk one prospect for a chance to add a veteran winger to the mix. I could see something like Eberle + Sanderson for a guy like Brock Boeser in Calgary. (L3)
Update #2 - April 17 - 2022 - 10:52 AM EST
Its been a hectic week for me, thought I had a leak in the kitchen and bedroom before I remembered I'm a beaver and that its just my dam.
After last nights move to acquire Evgeni Kuznetsov, I get the feeling that Vegas is pretty much done. Anything can happen in the 4 hours leading up to the deadline, but my gut tells me they have now made the changes that they are going to make.
San Jose is still working diligently to move players for prospects and picks. I expect a late trade for San Jose, GM Joe cant control himself, trading is like a crack addiction to the guy.
Things have been quiet in Ottawa, but with the team sitting in the basement and Dustin Brown getting up their in age, I wonder if he could be a name that gets dangled within the next few hours. A package including a B Prospect and a 2nd round pick might be enough to get Ottawa to move on from the veteran forward.
Hampus Lindholm and Ryan Ellis in Vancouver are also names that could certainly help a playoff team, however the issue surrounding Ellis is he has only suited up for 5 NHL games this season and will be in for a poor rerate, but Lindholm could be very attractive, especially if Vancouver is willing to eat 3 million in salary. He could easily net them a 1st round pick +.
GM Scott Davidson is still ride or die with his veterans, and age is certainly creeping up on his roster. While he will likely go all in for one more deep playoff run, the future is bleak in Buffalo and this feels like it could be their last chance to compete for the cup for the foreseeable future. I could see old man Paul Stastny being a target from Edmonton for GM Davidson, although he will have other suitors.
Taylor Hall in Detroit is another huge name on the block. While he may not be the player he was 5 years ago when he wont the Hart, He is still a very capable 2nd line player. Even as a rental, Taylor Hall should command a 1st round pick and a top tier prospect. Id expect Detroit will likely have to hold half the salary, and maybe get a third team involved as well to hold salary. I think a team like Minnesota could make a run at him.
I'm hearing the market for Tyson Barrie in Chicago is non-existent currently. Maybe something changes in the hours leading up to the deadline, but Chicago's inability to hold any salary may be hampering their ability to make a trade.
It should be a fun deadline day, hope I can get in for another update as the deadline approaches quickly.
