After last season barely squeaking into the playoffs and taking the top seeded LA Kings to a game 7 that no one saw coming and almost completing the reverse sweep. The fans were hungry for more playoff hockey in Anaheim and with a corner stone of McDavid something had to be done to give him some help and push this team to be more competitive.
The 2021-2022 off season saw Anaheim add some new faces that have definitely helped get us to where we are right now. Here are the additions:
Alex Edler , Nate Schmidt, Jesper Fast, Tanner Pearson (moved to Edmonton), Alex Chaisson (moved to Winnipeg), Jonathan Drouin (moved to Montreal), Casey DeSmith (moved to can't remember lol), Pavel Zacha, Shayne Ghostisbere, Ryan Dzingel, Nikolaj Ehlers, Mattias Janmark, Carter Verhaeghe, Sam Gagner, Nate Thompson, Brock McGinn, Frank Vatrano (for his second stint here in Anaheim)
The Deal that saw Nikolaj Ehlers join McDavid on the top line saw Pierre-Luc Dubois and prospect Chase Stillman head to Vancouver. Ehlers has been a huge help seeing him put up 35 goals and 60 assists for 95 points in 78 games played this year and has helped Mcdavid get past the 100-point plateau at 108 points so far this season. Dubois this season in Vancouver has still put-up solid numbers with 16 goals 26 assists for 42 points in 76 games played. Overall Ehlers has been a welcome addition to Anaheim that saw them ink him to a 3 year 7-million-dollar extension and given the A with the departure of longtime assistant Capitan Evgeny Kuznetsov who was traded to Nashville for Carter Verhaeghe. Kuznetsov was then traded again by Nashville to Vegas.
The other big name coming to Anaheim was Pavel Zacha who took abit of time find his way with his new club but has since gone on to put up 17 goals, 36 assists for 53 points in 78 games played. His presence on the top line with McDavid and Ehlers has defiantly helped this team. He was runner up for the vacant assistant captaincy but the vote in the room from the players ultimately saw that honor go to Ehlers. Also, the addition of Edler on the back end has shown to be the leader the blue line core needed in 78 games so far this year he leads the blue line in points with 15 goals, 46 assists and 61 points good for third in scoring and a team leading +/- of plus 33 with his line mate of Joel Edmudson not far behind with a plus 31.
The in season additions have contributed as such:
Carter Verhaeghe- With Nashville: 68 games played for 27 goals, 26 assists for 53 points
since joining Anaheim: 11 games played for 2 goals and 3 assists for 5 points
Frank Vatrano- With Florida: 50 games played for 10 goals and 6 assists for 16 points
since joining Anaheim: 27 games played for 6 goals, and 7 assists for 13 points
Brock McGinn- With Montreal: 41 games played for 6 goals and 7 assists for 13 points
since joining Anaheim: 39 games played for 5 goals and 11 assists for 16 points
Mattias Janmark- With Tampa: 52 games played for 3 goals and 2 assists for 5 points
since joining Anaheim: 13 games played for 2 goals and 3 assists for 5 points
Sam Gagner- With Winnipeg: 68 games played for 13 goals and 14 assists for 27 points
since joining Anaheim: 9 games played for o goals and 2 assists for 2 points
While some have had some issues finding their roles on the squad others have fit in nicely and we really look forward to Verhaeghe to step up big time come the playoffs. Jusse Saros has had a great season taking over the number one spot after Cam Talbot left for Seattle in the expansion draft and has gone 40 wins, 19 losses, 3 OTL and 2 shut outs and a save % of 0.912 and a GAA of 2.56. Anton Khudobin took over back up duties after Casey DeSmith was traded and in 6 games played in Anaheim has gone 3 wins, 3 losses and a 0.922 save % and a 2.17 GAA and can definitely win us games if need be. Saro's play this year saw him sign a long term 5 year 8 million dollar deal to stay in sunny California before becoming a UFA this summer. Anaheim's roster past this season is looking exactly the same as it does right now with everyone having a contract for next season and 4.8 million in cap space. After this season 5 players will have expiring contracts and possibly heading to free agency and wanting contracts for the 2023-2024 season with Anaheim will for sure be looking at locking up Carter Verhaeghe long term. The Ducks will also be looking for Caleb Jones fight for a roster spot next season and look forward to Alex Regula, Devante Stephens, and Scott Ready joining the Sand Diego Gulls next season and are really excited for when Corson Ceulemans can join the team in the near future along with Joe Miller, Manix Landry
Anaheim currently sits 3rd in West with 4 games left to play (Edmonton, San Jose, Los Angeles, Seattle) they could possibly take 2nd in the West behind the juggernaut that is Dallas. to go from a team that just got in the playoffs last season to being on top of the Pacific Division and in the top 3 in the West is a huge improvement from past years and Anaheim is looking to improve on last season’s first round loss and try to get to cup finals and will not go down without a fight
