After Pronger played for Tampa he had been a big driving force both literally and figuratively. Pronger was traded for depth in not just center and defense but in prospects aswell.
McNeil: " We are fighting for a playoff spot, whenever you can grab a player like Rolston, Bergeron or Cullen for a playoff push it is a benifit to your club. Not only was I able to acquire those names, I was able to add to my rather impressive pool of prospects in players like the Donatis who have been on top of the OHL for the time they have played."
With the team going under a major face lift the Tampa Bay organization re-named their current captaincy status.
The Captain ....
Brian Rolston:" After the rumours were flying that I may be moving to Tampa. I was hoping that GM McNeil was going to pick Ottawa's offer. Now that I have had a meeting with the GM and I have gotten to know the players and staff I am actually quite excited to see what this club can do. What push we can provide for the playoff hunt."
McNeil:" I chose Buffalo's offer basically for the prospects. Another selling point was the fact that i would receive a classy, star forward in Rolston. His experience and leadership along with his scoring and ability to make a game breaking difference."
The First Alternate Captain...
Marc-Andre Bergeron: I want to strive for the better, I get top minutes on a club like Tampa. I want to prove I can help a team gain a playoff position and maintain it. I have been in this situation before with Edmonton fighting to get into the stanley cup finals."
McNeil:"He was a big part of the Oilers cup run. He also is a sort of fill-in for Pronger's hole left after the deal. If he can develope and use one of the hardest slapshots in hockey, he will scare the crap out of opponents."
The Second Alternate Captain...
Eric Belanger:" I have been here for the good and bad times, to be honest it has been mostly bad. I just seem to have this desire to compete even in the worst of times for this franchise. I have had the pleasure to be an Assistant Captain before, and I cherish the fact that I keep getting these opportunities to showcase what I can do in the NHL."
McNeil: "This is an example of a class-act player. He doesn't complain, but he also lets people know what he wants. He is a player that provides an edge both defensively and has he has proven offensively. I will continue to give him respect as he does towards the lightning."
