With it only being months on the job for GM Chris Floresco, yes it's only been 7 months! A complete change of approach has been done for the Kings. Gone are most of the veterans and incoming are youth and draft picks. Leading up to the trade deadline there was one goal in mind which kick started the entire process. Regain our first rounder so we can do a proper rebuild.
Thanks to Florida Panthers and this guy Mika. the Kings got control of there future with re-acquiring there 1st round selection in the 2022 draft. That trade happened to get us the 8th best odds in the VHL Draft Lottery and what do you know, the Kings got very lucky and landing the 1st overall draft selection in the 2022 VHL Draft! Who we proceeded to select Shane Wright who we feel is the best player in the 2022 draft class and now has a huge chip on his shoulder going forward. In the same deal got a lot of key pieces of our future team with the likes of the Blues 1st rounder turning out to be another potential high end forward in Ivan Miroshnichenko along with Xavier Bourgault & Liam Foudy to build around.
The Kings also made another major move with reshaping the teams future by trading out both Kris Letang and Matthew Tkachuk and bringing in Kent Johnson plus a bunch of youth with SEA 2022 1st (Filip Mesar) and a 2023 SEA 1st, TAM 2nd which we flipped later on for a 23 2nd, along with some nice pieces Nico Daws & David Farrance to let them hopefully develop and turn into NHL players down the road.
Next up was moving out some veterans and retaining salary and getting a future 2nd and 3rd rounder in two separate deals leading up to the Trade Deadline.
Once the season ended and the Playoffs where completed. The Kings where hard at it again. First order of business was moving out Mats Zuccarello and got a 22 NJD 1st who turned out to be Brad Lambert (who we are very high on his potential) along with a key youth piece we hope develops into a full time NHLer in Drew Helleson. Yes we as well took on a over priced, cough 10 million per... Wheeler to make it happen but with him having two years left on his contract was very enticing on our end never mind how much he is actually making.
Next up for our off season order of business was moving out McDonagh. With doing so GM Floresco made his very first 3 team deal in his 18 years of experience. Of course with salary retained the Kings brought in key pieces such as Carson Lambos, Ryker Evans and a future 2nd round draft choice.
Tyler Seguin was next up to trade in and doing so took on a bad contract to get a 2023 1st round pick out of the deal.
In another move with the Rangers the Kings moved up in the 2023 draft from a 2nd round pick to a 1st round selection by taking on the like of Tatar and Jaskin off there hands.
The 2nd time in his career GM Floresco got involved in another 3 way trade but this time just being a salary retention scenario and getting a 3rd round draft choice out of it from it from VGK. Who we later flipped the 22 pick for a 23 pick.
Jaroslav Halak was next on the chopping block and acquired a young goalie in Jones and a 24 3rd rounder with of course salary retention on my end.
TJ Brodie was just moved out to the Sabres for a 24 2nd round pick with of course more salary retention on my end for the last year of his contract.
As you see the Kings have been open for business and the clear direction is build through youth and through the draft. There are still guys who we view that can be moved to contending teams when the time is right going forward. Just having a wait and see approach and will gauge the market each day forward.
The 2022 VHL Draft was good to the Kings. We had four 1st round draft selections and we drafted in each spot players we thought who had bright futures in the NHL starting in the 22/23 season and going forward. Rumors where swirling the Kings where trying to trade up early on to get another high 1st rounder but decided to stay put with the four selections we worked hard to acquire.
1st overall - Shane Wright
22nd overall - Ivan Miroshnichenko
25th overall - Brad Lambert
30th overall - Filip Mesar
** moved out two picks for the 2023 draft class and deferred to another draft year **
Next up was free agency
Yes the Kings mostly brought in depth pieces (Lindgren, CJ Smith, Nutivaara, Carrick, Perlini) to get though a rough spot this upcoming season but did manage to snag a dmen who they think can be apart of there future in Jacob Middleton who signed to a fair value 3 year contract to be apart of the bright future of this team.
Getting the 1st overall selection and being lucky to draft Shane is huge for the future of the Kings. Having a 1a/1b approach down the middle with the Johnson/Wright or Wright/Johnson is where the Kings where looking to improve from the get go. All the young prospects surrounding those two they will now to grow together in the hopes of building something great long term in Los Angeles.
Rome wasn't built in day, it took time to build something great and long lasting. The Kings are taking the same approach to build something long lasting here in the VHL.
