A current GM recently brought up the idea of adding conditional draft picks to our league. This idea has been tossed about in the past, and has collectively been decided against each time. However, there now seems to be more of an appetite for it. Before we set out a specific set of rules for conditional picks, we would like to know if other GMs would be in favour of adding a new wrinkle to trading in the VHL

Would be curious if the limit of prospects then increases

I like the idea of conditional picks but it needs to be strictly policed.
When someone trades a conditional pick, I don't think there's any way in the sim to represent conditional picks, so people might forget they 'traded' a pick that should be held in case the conditions are met for a previous trade. Maybe any trade with conditional picks are 'pinned' to the top of the Official Trade Board and labeled as including conditional picks or something like that.

IMO conditional picks could be tracked in an external database or spreadsheet with all details included and maybe added as a hyperlink in the left side nav. Limiting conditions to team performance would suffice I think instead of player performance so you get conditions like "If Canucks miss playoffs, they retain their pick this year and give up the pick in next year's draft" instead of "If James Neal records at least 21 goals in the 2019-20 season AND Milan Lucic scores at least 10 fewer goals than James Neal in the 2019-20 season then Oilers recieve an additional 3rd round pick" which I think would be too nuanced.
There would need to be an extra layer to trade validation to ensure picks in trades can actually be traded, but I am confident with a dedicated league like VHL this would strictly be enforced.
I think it would be a positive addition to VHL as someone who did a total of 12 trades this year, a lot of trade discussions stopped because of perceived value of picks and apprehension of trading a pick with potentially immense value in the future. If there was a safety net like conditions it may facilitate more teams to free-wheel in trades because they know that due to a condition, they didn't trade away a potential lottery pick.

The Staff will be strictly monitoring trades, but it would also the GMs' responsibility to know which picks they have conditions on. We have not yet fully agreed upon what the rules regarding conditional picks will look like, but there would be restrictions on the type and number of conditions that can be put in place. Would be curious if the limit of prospects then increases No it would not, and I honestly don't see the reasoning behind adding conditional picks would necessitate a prospect limit increase

I'm an idiot. I was thinking of compensatory picks. Whoops 😂😂😂

Yeah, I am definitely against having pick conditions tied to player performance. The sim is unpredictable with player performances from year to year. Plus having to track specific player performances, especially when said player could get dealt to another team a week or two later, just adds another element that I have no interest in tracking. Pick conditions would be tied to team performance only.

bad idea, there are enough variables to deal with For the first time in VHL history, I think I agree with you. It's a fun concept indeed, but when dissecting it further, I lean towards no because I feel like it will be adding just one too many variables to the league. I don't really like the idea of picks being tied to conditions. A lot of GMs trade at will, sometimes GMs leave and get replaced, and I don't want new managers coming in having to deal with conditions they did not agree to. But we put this poll up because we didn't want the staff solely deciding this. If it gets overwhelming support in favour of yes, then we will look into the next phase of ironing this out and implementing it into the league.

I change my vote to no after thinking about this.
