Alright guys here is the 2019 Ratings Preview!

Don't freak out you aren't seeing things! We have completely revamped Forward and Defense ratings to better show the elite tier players, the good players, and the bottom players.
The differences are pretty drastic so lets recap them below: Note that in the 50-59 range this was basing all prospects to start at 55 across the board, this will now change to be 45 across the board. However, please note that overall is not the best indication to look at a player. It is best to look at specific categories and determine what role you need from them to fill.
Forwards
12 Forwards across 31 teams = 372 players. If you take the players in the 80, 70 and 60 range you result with 409 players. You see the big drop off in the 80-86 range separating the elite players followed by the drop off in 70-79 range separating the 2nd liners and top 3rd liners from the rest of the bottom 2 line forwards.
Defenseman
6 Defenseman across 31 teams = 186. If you take the players in the 80, 70 and 60 range you result with 259 defenseman. You see the big drop off in the 80-86 range separating the elite defenseman. You'll notice the 70-79 range is relatively similar 6 less, but you need to account that 33 players dropped from the 80 range into this range. 60-69 range saw a bump of 7 players as a result of the above, while the 50-59 range is drastically different due to the new rating system.
Goalies
We did not do too much of a difference to goalies as we wanted to test the ratings prior to making changes to the goalies which seem to be running great. However, we will be making adjustments to the goalie ratings. Please note we have not yet filtered out AHL goalies yet so if you see a player such as Jake Oettinger please ignore this for now and only compare NHL goalies. We will be spreading out the overalls a bit more for goalies so they are not as grouped up in the mid 80s range currently as shown.
Leadership & Experience:
I will be revamping these 2 fields but we wanted to get the ratings out as a preview since we are in off-season mode. I will be generating all NHL players at a 65 or 70 base to both LD and EX. Players will then receive a +1 to LD and EX for every 50 games played. Players will also receive a +1 for every 10 playoff games. Players who are Captains for the current year will receive a +4 boost. Assistant Captains will receive a +2 boost.
Penalty Shots & Fighting:
Though these ratings don't have an impact on overall, they are still a part of the sim. Eric Wolf will be doing these ratings for all players. These have not yet been touched and are simply pulled from the template we use as a base.
I cannot stress enough that while overall is nice to look at, it is not always indicative to how good a player actually is. For example Andy Greene is a 77 Overall landing him as the 85th best overall defenseman. However, his only real good attributes are his DF rating at 95, ST rating at 91, and DI rating at 95, along with his current LD and EX which will indeed be changing as noted above. Greene does not excel at skating, endurance, puck handling, checking, passing, or scoring when compared to other players. He is simply just a defensive defenseman and is rated that way, but the other categories are huge factors and don't tell the true tale behind him as obviously overalls for defenseman take more weight into the DF rating.
If you have a question regarding a specific categorical rating for a player, please provide an example of other players as to why they should be rated either higher or lower. I recommend using the other players with the same rating or +/- 2 rating range to see if it makes sense prior to asking Kyle or myself any questions.
Obviously Kyle and I can indeed miss something whether it is from when we are doing a VLookup, using multiple spreadsheets, or simply put the wrong rating when transferring back to the google doc. We are very quick to adjust these as noted with Ryan O'Reilly using Cal O'Reilly's ratings by accident which we quickly resolved.
We hope you all enjoy the new and improved ratings and look forward to feedback!
