Best ratings I’ve seen since I joined the league

They are definitely phenomenal ratings. Adam did a great job. We've always done ratings based only on previous year. Its just recently I've been thinking maybe we should go multi year.

Situations like this are part of the reason why I will be pushing for ratings to be based on previous 2 years for next season and beyond. I agree this part of ratings need to be updated, but I'm not sure a 2 year aggregate is the answer. I think the best ratings are heavily skewed to the most recent sample of work. For players like Kucherov and Toews, I think a blanket rule should be in place like take their last completed season, but apply an 15% reduction to their previous rating. That way players are hurt by not playing, but not completely demolished and deemed less valuable than a bag of pucks. The other option, and something to chew on is that now that I have the model in place, we can do a mid-season rerate around the All-Star break. Seeing as how it took me 20min to do the 2020-2021 goalie ratings and a little bit longer to do the players, doing a mid-season rerate is not this insurmountable mountain of work. Just some options to improve this aspect of SIM...

I wouldn’t do a mid year re-rate. I think having clear ratings for each season is important to how GM’s build their teams. I suppose you could apply the same logic to ratings based on one season, but I’d love to see a blend. I think something like 70% most recent season, 20% the season before, and 10% for 3 seasons ago would eliminate some of the noise and create a more accurate picture of what a player is at a moment in time.

personally I think simple LTIR is the easiest/most non intrusive way to solve this specific issue. No rerates as we have it works great and then also guarantees it can't be used for cap circumvension either since no player can return at any point in the season.
No need to mess up these phenomenal player ratings.

... Reasons why LTIR should be a thing when there are no mid season re-rates. That would be huge

Personally I’d vote against LTIR and any rerates. Leave a good thing alone.

I'll be honest I've always detested the 55 thing. back in the old days, ratings were done over a two year nhl period, but that hasn't been the case for a number of years. I would love a 2 year ratings package weighted of course to the current in like a 63/35 fashion. I would also be in favor of injured guys just rated for the previous season and then penalized 20% or something for being out the year

Last time I checked a 63/35 leaves 2% on the table haha.
